Description
Two great characters from the Redwall series.
Basil Stag Hare, retired foot-fighter and expert in the art of camouflage. Yet, in all his career, it appears he had remained a bachelor his whole life, although he was a figure of gallantry around the ladies.
When Matthias, Basil and Jess Squirrel were trailing the evil fox Slagar the Cruel in their efforts to rescue Mattimeo and his young friends, they stumbled upon the slavers' abandoned cart - in which they found the young orphaned otter named Cheek, sheltering from the rainy weather.
Though friendly and fun-loving as any regular otter, the little fellow proved to live up to his name, even calling Basil a "funny rabbit".
Nonetheless, the two became close and seemed to develop a sort of bond. So much so, in fact, that Basil adopted Cheek after the events of the story.
I wanted to show something of that father-son relationship - there seems to be an absence of these two together.
